Frequently Asked Questions

Considering therapy at Jill Smith & Associates? Here are clear answers about fit, fees, telehealth, and how to get started across our Midlands offices.

Getting started

What to know before your first call or session.

I’m nervous about counseling. What if this isn’t a good fit?

Most people are nervous at first—that is normal. There is no obligation to continue if the fit feels wrong. We welcome honest conversation about what is or isn’t working and will help you adjust or plan next steps.

My problems feel overwhelming. Where do I start?

Start with one appointment. Therapy does not require you to solve everything at once. Simply talking about feeling overwhelmed is a meaningful beginning. See What to Expect for the step-by-step process.

Should I come alone or bring my child or partner?

If you are reading this, start with you. We will help figure out whether individual, couples, child, or family sessions make sense. Family members can sometimes work with the same clinician; other times a second therapist is better.

What happens when I call or request an appointment?

Our phones are answered by people, not an automated maze. Share what you need help with, preferred times, and location. We help match you with a clinician and follow up promptly if we miss your call.

What if I am not satisfied with my experience?

Your satisfaction matters to us. Jill Smith & Associates stands behind a 100% satisfaction commitment and offers easy, non-defensive access to management for any complaint or concern. Tell your therapist, call 803-814-5559, or use our Contact form. We will listen and help you find the right path forward—including a different therapist match when that is the best fit.

Couples & family

How we approach relationship and family care.

Do you work with couples?

Yes. Couples therapists at Jill Smith & Associates pursue specialized training. Our primary couples approach is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Jill Smith is Certified in EFT, and couples clinicians train and supervise in this model.

Can I do individual therapy and couples therapy?

Yes. Many clients do both over time. We coordinate thoughtfully so care supports the whole system.

We’re in crisis and unsure about staying together. Can you help?

Yes. Discernment and crisis seasons are common. We help you slow down, understand the cycle, and make clearer next steps—whether that means repair, separation planning support, or both over time.

Fees & insurance

Self-pay details. More on our Self-Pay & Insurance page.

Do you take insurance?

Sessions are primarily self-pay. We accept Healthy Connection and First Choice Select Health Medicaid plans, and Medicare acceptance is coming soon. We can provide a superbill on request for possible out-of-network reimbursement—you submit it to your plan. See our Self-Pay & Insurance page for details.

How much does a session cost?

Sessions are typically 50 minutes and range from $160 to $250 depending on clinician experience and licensure. EMDR sessions may be longer. Masters-level interns may offer lower-cost sessions—please inquire. We accept cards (no Amex), HSA/FSA, checks, and cash.
